Impressionism vs. Cubism Art, according to Websters Dictionary, is a human skill of expression of other objects by painting, drawing, and sculpture. People have used art as a form of expression for a long time. From the Mesopotamian era to the Classical Greeks and the present. Art is expressed in many different ways and styles, and is rapidly changing, one style replacing another. Impressionism and Cubism broke away from the traditional style of painting. They were both looking for a new way to express everyday life. Time is an important tool that is used in Cubism as well as Impressionism. Cubists were looking for a different way to express human form as well as art in general. According to Fiero, the Cubist image, conceived as if one were moving around, above, and below the subject and even perceiving it from within, appropriated the fourth dimension-time itself. The object is taken and looked at in many perspectives and is represented that way on the canvas. Monets painting Sunrise displays vivid color, which is commonly used among impressionists. The painting is of the sun rising over the lake, over looking the bay and the boats within. Sunrise is a patently a seascape; but the painting says more about how one sees than about what one sees. It transcribes the fleeting effects of light and the changing atmosphere of water and air into a tissue of small dots and streaks of color-the elements of pure perception (Fi ero 114). Question: Discuss about theAcademic Research Writing. Answer: Introduction Academic writing refers to the act of publishing a conducted research that is set in several subsets of forms and genres. This article sets out to provide a full spectrum of the critical components of academic writing and also gives examples of academic writings. The paper will set out to present an overview of the critical approaches applicable when one does a piece of about a subject. Much as writing is always seen to be influenced by the social context in which the literature is produced, it is highly influenced by the thought processes that writers go through before doing the actual writing or in the course of their writing. Research conducted on the role of cognition in writing has it that the writing processes have a great role in shaping how writers think about what they write. The research further shows that the transformation of integrated word forms part of the integral component of the thoughts therein and as such, forms part of the fundamental processes of the most skilled writers. According to Bergmann, (2008), one cannot single out any academic literacy based on the far-fetched variations that exist between the genres. When carrying out academic writing, one does so in a dispassionate and impersonal tone, usually targeted for an informed and critical audience that is more often than not, informed on a strictly established knowledge, and meant to challenge or enforce some concepts or arguments. The writing usually revolves around and within the academic world. Nonetheless, an academic writer may also find his or her audience outside this establishment through written speeches, pamphlets, and journalism among other media. In English as a subject, some elements of ambiguity often emanate from the multifaceted nature of the literacy texts. According to Preece, (1998), uncertainty, ambiguity, and indeterminacy are all integral components of literacy expression and often form part of the fictional texts that portray their own meaning. Belcher et. al., (1985) on his part maintains that the ambiguity is an integral component of the literature that depicts the quality of the piece of work and helps in distinguishing the reading text from the interpretation. He closes by saying that the above assertion has a bearing on the failures as captured by the reading. When students are set to come up with a comprehensively researched academic work, they must always take into account the fact that evaluative judgment of their course and experience is essential. This is because multiple issues including interpretation may be varied from one individual to another and as such, may be more plausible than others. Notably, coming up with a well-documented and compelling argument can be very useful in ensuring that one develops an idea by use of referenced information. By all standards, an academic writing must always have an objective stance that clearly defines the significance of the topic of discussion. This is usually organized with some adequacy so as to enable other scholars to attempt replicating the findings. It should be noted that substantial scholarly papers are often not overly seen as general but instead makes use of the formal academic rhetoric when need be. How can one Achieve a good Research Paper? For one to achieve this, it is important to have in place a well worked out plan that involves stages. The actual writing process is often hectic, messy and recursive if one is not very careful. The given outline will help through the writing process and ensure that the outcome is palatable in all respects. The first step includes discovering, narrowing down and focusing on the researchable topic. The next stage will be finding and selecting the various resource materials. Grouping and sequencing of the information to be researched about is then documented. What follows is the outline of the subject matter together with ones prospect. Having these in place, it becomes imperative to have an introduction of the paper, a thesis statement which captures the key ideas of the write-up and then the body. This is where the details concerning the research work are obtained including previous studies. Joy Luck Club In the novel "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan, the ignorance, the disregard of, and the necessity of love are all introduced as the characters tell their life stories and memories. The characters in "The Joy Luck Club" take love for granted. By ignoring love, concentrating more on material possessions, and hiding their true identities, the characters don't realize love's importance. One character that takes love for granted is Harold, Lena St. Clair's husband. This occurs when Lena leans over to him in their car and states "I love you." He responds by asking Lena a question about his car, which seems to be more important to him than his relationship with her. Harold does not realize the importance of love. He only thinks about material possessions. Since Harold does not revealing his true nature, he reveals that he has a lack of love for himself as an individual. The love you have for yourself is a necessity in life because it provides self-respect; if one respects oneself, one will respect and love others. The story of Lindo Jong provides insight into the concept of revealing your true nature. To "keep everything inside" as does Lindo Jong, provides for not being able to experience love to its fullest. Lindo Jong hides "under a red marriage scarf" in attempt to shield herself from the outside world. Her "hiding under the scarf" demonstrates that to be able to love, you must be able to first reveal your true nature. Ying-Ying St. Clair stands as an example of the desire to remain hidden as she says, "All these years I kept my true nature hidden, running along like a small shadow so nobody could catch me." The image of the shadow relates directly to the red marriage scarf. They both attempt to provide the concealment of their true natures, because the result of revealing your true self may be that of "pain". The importance of love goes unnoticed as the characters take love for granted and expect it to naturally come to them. The ceasing of taking love for granted does occur later and has its results and consequences. The characters realize that they are taking love for granted when they feel meaningless and uncomfortable, and stop doing so by either ending the relationship or confronting the problem. By not taking love for granted and realizing "there's absolutely nothing left to save" in her marriage, Rose Hsu Jordan recognizes that she must divorce her husband. Rose Hsu Jordan does not feel comfortable with her life and feels that she is living under false pretences. She comprehends that she is not what she continually pretends to be. Therefore, she stops taking love for granted and ignoring it, and instead moves on to a better, more comfortable life with a feeling of being needed. Lindo Jong compares love to a hill and as to heaven. This hill symbolizes the steps that she must take to truly attain love and enter heaven, her comparison to happiness and a comfortable lifestyle. Love proves hard to attain but Lindo Jong learns to embrace it and accept it as best she can. The "pained feeling" at the "beginning of love" provides insight into the revelation of the true nature of the character. This pained feeling, the lifting of the scarf or the shadow, opens the door to the true nature of the character. This love provides better understanding and a better love of your own character. Harlem Renaissance and Josephine Baker essays What exactly was the Harlem Renaissance? If you analyze the word, Harlem was a black community of New York City, and a Renaissance is a rebirth. The Harlem Renaissance was the outstanding eruption and rebirth of creativity by African Americans in many different fields of art. Whether it be black poets, writers, artists, actors, dancers, or whatnot, they all flocked to northern cities, especially Harlem. In Harlem, which grew to be the largest black community in the United States, blacks did not face the horrible prejudices that hounded them in the outside world. They were freer to do what they wanted to, and the creative brains of several blacks rose to the surface to initiate the rebirth of all of the imaginative feelings that had been pushed back for so long. The Harlem Renaissance was supported and full of "New Negroes." The "New Negro" was the black of the future. Instead of the passive, "This is what God wanted us to be doing, to be second-class, lets just live with it," Old Negro way of thinking, the New Negro believed that they deserved equal treatment and were striving for the future. Josephine Baker was a New Negro, though not in the USA. She shined in France because American audiences would not accept her black elegance, believing such a thing could not exist. However, she would not just give up - she spread her talent overseas in Europe, and helped them understand how blacks were just as sophisticated as whites. In other words, she celebrated and took the Harlem Renaissance and its meaning to others around the world. During this time period and far afterwards, Josephine Baker earned a long list of achievements ranging from being the most photographed woman in the world at one point to being the first American woman to be buried with French military honors. The group planned to infiltrate the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters, located on the sixth floor of the Watergate apartment and office complex in Washington DC. Leading the conspiracy were US Attorney General John Mitchell, deputy director of the CRP Jeb Magruder, and CRP counsel G. Gordon Liddy. Their goal was to photograph campaign materials and place bugging devices in the office of Democratic National Chairman Lawrence F. ... The Watergate break-in eventually exposed a whole array of campaign practices designed to disrupt or embarrass the political opposition, all of which commentators later summarized as 'dirty tricks.' Investigation and Prosecution When making an attempt to break into the Watergate building in order to fix up previously installed wiretapping equipment, all the burglars were caught red-handed by the police on information of the building guard. The number of these burglars was five including Bernard Barker, Virgilio Gonzlez, Eugenio Martnez, James W. McCord, Jr., and Frank Sturgis. After investigation the police found telephone number of E. Howard Hunt in McCord's notebook who was Chief of Security at the Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP). This was a strong proof that strengthens the idea that there was surely a connection between the burglars and someone close to the President. Investigation started to find a link between McCord and the CIA and finally it was discovered that the CRP bribed McCord. The White House denied any knowledge of the break in. Six days later, John Haldeman, the White House Chief of Staff, met with Nixon to tell him that the FBI had traced the money found in the burglars' possession to CREEP. In a tape-recorded conversation, Nixon asked Haldeman to get in touch with the CIA to have the FBI's investigation stopped. In spring 1973, three of the five indicted men in the Watergate break-in pled guilty, while the remaining two were found guilty after a trial. The Cuban men were each sentenced to forty years in prison, and Hunt was sentenced to thirty-five. Shakespeare came into the picture in 1592, as an actor and dramatist. The exact date of his entrance in the theatrical world is as yet, not known, but it is believed to be the late 1500s. And still, the first published work of the infamous William Shakespeare was seven years after his demise, in the year 1616, a result of the efforts of his companions and colleagues. It was called, The Great Folio of 1623 (Honigmann 1-12). His works were considered classic during his lifetime, but the fame was nothing which came after his demise. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays and sonnets mostly followed the genre of tragedy, yet in the later part of his career, he wrote romantics, or tragic comedies. But it was the tragedies that really took place into the hearts and souls of men. He gave authenticity to his tragedies by relating them to real historical instances; however, the plays were not in the exact timeli ne of these instances (Bevington 50-68). His tragedies are renowned for a reason. ââ¬Å"Shakespeareââ¬â¢s language, his insight into the characters, and his dramaturgical inventiveness set his tragedies apart from any elseâ⬠(McAlindon 1-22). Any exceptional play or book is exalted in the words, ââ¬Å"like a Shakespearean tragedyâ⬠. However, no tragedy can ever touch the bar set by Shakespeare. It is that reason that his tragic works became so distinguished. ââ¬Å"A tragedy is an intense exploration of suffering and evil focused on the experience of an exceptional individual, distinguished by rank or character or bothâ⬠and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s had it and more (McAlindon 1-22). One such Shakespearean Tragedy was the story of Caesar. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s main source for the play is Plutarch's famous biographyà The Life of Julius Caesar, written in Greek in the 1st century and translated into English in 1579 by Sir Thomas North. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar was published in the First Folio in 1623; however, it was performed on stage before that. The earliest performance of the play that has been recorded was in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time. It was held in the Globe Theatre (possibly), on the twenty first of September, 1599 (Ripley 13-14). It was Thomas Platter, a Swiss traveller, who saw and recorded this play which has been the earliest record of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. According to his memoirs, the play was performed by excellent actors in a ââ¬Å"strewn roof-houseâ⬠at around 2 oââ¬â¢clock after dinner (Ripley). Shakespeareââ¬â¢s writing on Caesar was not the first, nor was it the last. Many writers wrote before him about the great Caesar, and even more wrote after Shakespeare. Yet none was able to capture the beauty of the story; no one portrayed better the betrayals, the morbid qualities, the desperation and the love in the story. It therefore, became most known as Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragedy, rather than being known a s one of his numerous works. In fact, among all of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays, Caesar stands ninth in theatrical popularity; Macbeth, Othello Hamlet and such preceding it (Raffel xvii-xix). Caesar himself appears very few times throughout the play, however. It is the chaos that reigns after his death that captivates the audience. A particularly famous one that I love is the twentieth century production by Orson Welles. George Orson Welles remains one of the most famous of all Hollywoodââ¬â¢s directors.
